Before I get into the long story of our team “The Western Horde” and our time at The World Nomad Games – Serena Lynn and I were invited on to a local Bishkek morning show to discuss our time at the games.

I’m compiling a larger set of articles, but just know this has been a trip for the record books.

Decided to try something different. Making some Manchu arrows using @nomadicartsarchery tanged arrowheads and his technique for wrapping the nock in polished stingray skin. You have to take it down to near paper thin to get the proper look and feel. They’ll be fletched with 12” peeled turkey wing fletching.
May 29, 1453 - one of the biggest events in European history: The fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans lead by Sultan Mehmed II, thus ending the control of the city by the Byzantine Empire. The siege lasted over 50 days, and had a number of fascinating elements to overcome the defenses of the massive city. It utilized not only ground forces, but also a sizeable Ottoman navy, a massive array of siege cannons and a clever way around the chain that blocked the river entrance to Golden Horn, the heart of the city. The battle changed the course of European history, more so than many other battles of the time. And as a little piece of trivia - the name Constantinople was not changed to Istanbul until long after the fall of the city. Officially the name was changed in 1930 after the capital moved to Ankara. That said - we miss all our Turkish friends, we hope to see you next year!

Another of our oddities - the very rare “steel arrow”. This particular arrow was featured in @loadesmike books “War Bows” and “The Composite Bow”. From one of our fellow historians on the intended use: “Pant, who wrote Indian Archery, says that steel arrows are used against war elephants; the main target being the eye. If one could manage that the elephant would go berserk killing his handler, passengers and any one else available. Alternately, a steel arrow was the only thing heavy enough to pierce elephant hide.”
